About John Barnes


John Barnes is the driving force behind Barnes Association Consultants, and it’s his passion to help associations get better.

John’s professional experience

Before launching Barnes Association Consultants, John was Chief Executive Officer at the American Physical Therapy Association. John led the creation and implementation of the vision, mission, and strategic plan for the association and was responsible for leadership and management of all aspects of the association including governance, administration, government affairs, communications, and education. APTA is an 85,000-member national health care provider association with a $42,000,000 annual budget and 180 staff.

Before serving as CEO at APTA, John worked at the American Academy of Dermatology as their Deputy Executive Director. John was a leader in all aspects of managing the organization, including strategic planning, budgeting, organizational development, outreach to external groups, and staff management and development. John was directly responsible for the federal government affairs, state government affairs, health policy, and science and research departments.

John also served as Director of Government Affairs at the Steel Tank Institute, where he was responsible for government and public affairs for this national association representing steel tank manufacturers.

John has extensive public policy experience through his years serving on Capitol Hill. John was Chief of Staff to U.S. Representative Greg Ganske of Iowa. As Chief of Staff, John managed and directed congressional offices in Washington and Iowa, including legislation, communications and political operations.

He also worked for Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa. While with Senator Grassley, John formulated strategies for legislative issues including appropriations, economic development, small business, transportation, and housing. He also assisted Iowa businesses in their dealings with the federal government, protecting their interests and helping them with legislation, regulations, government procurement, and international trade.

John is a member of the American Society of Association Executives, Association Forum, the American Association of Medical Society Executives, BoardSource, and the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce.

John has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Creighton University with an economics major.

Other interesting facts

John grew up in Missouri Valley, Iowa, a small town in western Iowa.

He is married to Rebecca Barnes. They live in Alexandria, Virginia with their two children, Hannah (aged 20) and Jack (aged 18). John is an avid sports fan who follows the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Creighton Bluejays, the Washington Redskins, and the Washington Nationals.

John loves to hike, watch movies and read about history and politics.
